Meet Josefina!

By Brianna Griesinger

“Before we had to plan everything with my husband’s money, but now we can buy other things,” Josefina explains. She has been working with Awamaki for about four years now, and the benefits are clear.

Josefina has been married for 18 years, and is a mother of four. Her older sons attend secondary school at age 17, and 18; she also has a three-year-old daughter, Eva Luna, who is adventurous, silly, and brave spending her days at her mother’s side, along with her baby brother.

She loves the opportunity to weave larger pieces with her own designs, but her favorite work to do is preparing earth-oven lunches for tourists when they come for visits to her community of Huilloc Alto. She insists it is because those tours are more lucrative but we tease her we know it is because the food is so delicious!

Josefina’s smile is contagious, and just being in her presence makes it clear that she is a natural leader in her community. She is confident, and brave, and eager to learn and work; being around her is inspirational.

Her dreams are like many of the women we work with; she wants her children to be able to study, so they can continue to better themselves, and the opportunities available to them. One day, if her sons are able to get degrees she hopes they could all pool their money together and buy a car as a family.

Women like Josefina are why we do what we do, we believe in the power of women.
