Support Maria Salome's Dream for a New Year

As a child growing up in the 60s in a rural Quechua village in the Andes, Maria Salome learned to weave from her grandmother. She didn't attend school, and instead helped her family, including weaving clothing to keep her family warm.  Today, Maria Salome is a widow with grown children, and weaving is a way for to earn income from tourism.  "I have been delicate with my health and would like to make more steady income in case I need treatment, and to not bother my family with that," she told us. She also weaves to support her grandchildren when she can. Maria Salome and her fellow artisan women from the Awac Phuna weaving cooperative are dreaming of starting a business to host tourists in their village in 2020. To do this, they need training, market connections, and a place to host visitors.  Join us in giving Maria Salome and her fellow artisans the opportunity to build an independent and prosperous future for themselves and their families. We Couldn't Do Our Work Without You

Your donation funds education and training for Andean women. You fund field trips so that women artisans can see successful, women-led businesses. You invest in education in organic dyes, quality control, and business administration. You provide workshops in confidence and women’s leadership. Your gift makes our project possible, and enables artisan women to give a better life to their families. Much of our revenue comes from the programs that empower our artisan partners. We use donations to start or expand these self-sustaining programs. For example, donor funds cover the cost of working with a new cooperative until they have acquired the technical product skills and we have created the market access for the program to be self-sustaining. By donating to Awamaki, you invest in women’s skills and opportunities, and empower them to transform their communities with lasting, sustainable change. Your gift is the starting point from which we can operate the programs that create economic empowerment in women’s lives. Thank you!

Awamaki U.S. is a U.S. 501(c)(3) organization. You can donate online on this page. We also welcome checks sent to Awamaki / 4533 15th Ave S / Seattle, WA 98108.
